I entered the post above as "margo." I wanted to test the ability to register at the GAL eSalon as a member (not an Administrator) and to give directions about how to do so. It works fine now.

art.n.nature on "How Can Art Inspire Real Change?"

We, as artists, are doing art installations, performance pieces, art projects, educational outreach to raise consciousness about the environment, to raise eco-awareness, but some of our efforts might just as easily be initiated (and probably are) by non-artists, such as the Mountain-top Coal Removal efforts or work we did regarding the Obama campaign (yes, I know we made posters, etc., which are "art." Of course, we are looking at ways to bring our artistic skills to bear in the process. Many environmental issues occurring right now and into the future are so important that they should be brought to the attention of everyone, or as many people as we can reach, through our website, through educational programs, lectures, films, our Salons, our eSalon... I am excited that we are enlisting scientists as well as artists, but it might be valuable to try to carve out just how we intend to define what exactly it is that we do, what the limits, if any, are as to the projects we take on, how to most effectively reach people, whether some of our activities might not, in the truest sense, be thought of as "art," and how we decide who we most need to reach. The letter I sent from the whitehouse.gov website the other evening was something I did on my own, not anything intended necessarily to be connected with the Green Artists League, though it certainly relates to what we are doing. The urgency of global warming, of Mountain Top Coal Removal (and the fact that there IS NO SUCH THING AS CLEAN COAL), of sea rise, of solar and wind energy as viable alternatives to fossil fuels and nuclear power, are of paramount importance, and getting our message out to the highest levels in government might possibly result in some action... though I am not such an idealist as to think that my letter will be seen by the people in government who really need to read it, and it is probably too general, or very similar to a lot of other letters and have little effect. I do think, however, that we must think about how we can inform those people in positions of power, along with the general public, about some of the environmental issues we think are of the greatest importance. I wholeheartedly agree with getting scientists involved, since we may need hard numbers to back us up. I am not providing answers here but trying to encourage thought about how we should proceed, how we might begin to decide which projects to pursue, etc.

When look at the challenges of reducing global warming and changing recalcitrant human behavior, it is easy to be humble. What can we as artists do to effect positive change?
